Vacation thoughts

The good thing about vacation is that you don’t have to fight traffic. That’s because you don’t have a schedule to meet and hence you can drive through the traffic jam in leisure.

Familiar strangers

Dear Rebecca,

Mom and I we are really happy and excited to see you after almost three months of separation. You’ve grown up a lot! You looked a little bit scared and confused when you saw us. I guess your little brain is trying to remember our strange, but yet familiar faces. I was a little bit sad that you started to cry and asked grandma to hold you when I was trying to hug you. But it’s OK, I’m sure you’ll remember us tomorrow after you wake up.

My 1-year-old birthday!

Dear Mom & Dad:

How are you? I am doing pretty good in Grandma’s place. Today is my 1-year-old birthday. My new trick is able to stand for a while. Maybe I will show you how to walk when you guys are here ^O^.
“Dry Dad” brought me a BIG cake and Grandpa & Grandma were celebrating with me. I wish I can eat the WHOLE thing with my eyes ^^. To bad you guys cannot be here, but that’s OK because I am a BIG girl now and I know that we will always be together in God’s kingdom. Cannot wait to see you guys on Thursday!

Passion for work

Flu season is coming! As a believer of ‘Prevention is the best medicine’, we got our flu shot when we were at the hospital. What caught my attention was not the crowd of people that were waiting to get the vaccine, but the nurse who was administering it. The big smile on her face is what separated her from the other nurses.

No, no,… she wasn’t a super young and attractive woman. In fact, she was a retired nurse who volunteered to come to the hospital to help out during the flu season. When I asked why is she willing to spend her own time poking people that she has never met, she replied without hesitation that she simply loved her job. Actually, she confessed that her favourite job was actually working at the ER!

While my head turned to avoid seeing the needle, my mind kept thinking about what she just said. I wonder if I enjoy my work SO much that I’d be willing to do it even after retirement? Did she find the job that she loves or did she learn to love the job that she had?

When I walked out of the hospital, I realized that it is a blessing from God to be able to enjoy our work. Here’s how the Wise man puts it in the Ecclesiastes:

A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God.

Hmm… 30+ more years of “enjoying” working…. :-)

Ten days countdown…

In exactly 10 days, Pei and I will be back to Canada for vacation~~! On one hand we are happy to be able to see Rebecca after such a long time, but on the other hand, we know that our life without kid is about to end: no more movies or fancy restaurants!.

Both sides of the border are preparing for this event. My mom is teaching Rebecca to make 包子 in the hope that one day she’ll learn how to do it (it turns out that none of her 5 kids have the patience and/or endurance to learn it). We, on the other side of the border, just hired contractors to have our carpet cleaned. We had to do it because apparently Rebecca loves to kiss the carpet….. :)

It’s definitely going to be a busy 10-day countdown…
