When I was dressing up this morning, I realized that all my blue jeans were in the dryer, so I had to wear khakis and shirt to work instead. Pei, half asleep still, asked me why I was dressing up semi-formally for work.
Jokingly, I said “為了勾引小妹妹”. Of course, I didn’t mean it at all.
To my surprise, Pei burst into laughter and went back to sleep.
I guess it’s good that she didn’t take my word seriously, and it does show the kind of trust she has for me – a trust that I’d say is essential in any marriage. This explains the going-back-to-sleep part of her reaction, but what about the laughter?
It’s only when I got into the car that I fully realized why Pei found my comment so funny. Most single adult at my age would be driving a fancy car, carry the latest gadgets and wear no rings on their fingers. In constrast, I drive a 1990 Camry with a baby car seat on the back, my dinosaur cellphone barely fits in my pocket, and of course, I wear my wedding ring on my fingers. Moreover, there are only a handful of female co-workers at my workplace. Whenever they come to my cubicle, the first thing they notice is Rebecca’s smiling picture hanging on the wall.
So, probably that’s why Pei found it so funny the idea that I’d dress up to “勾引小妹妹”.
